The Future of the Gregson

Dear Gregson Centre Supporter,  

As you know the Gregson has been closed since 20th March because of the Government lock-down in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst the building has been closed our centre managers have been unable to pay their monthly management fee to the charity. We use this money every month to cover the charity’s expenses including the bank loan that we have secured against the building. We have been continuing to make the bank loan repayments throughout the lock-down and have been refused a payment holiday in spite of Government guidance to the banks. However, unless the Gregson opens its doors again very soon, the charity will be in deep financial trouble.

We have had some much-appreciated financial help from the City Council during this difficult period but this money will run out in the next few months. We are doing our level best to achieve grant funding and we have several applications pending but we cannot rely on receiving these grants and they are unlikely to cover our core costs, including the bank loan repayments that we have to make every month.

We cannot say at this moment in time what the intentions of our managing agents are in terms of them reopening the Gregson. It looks probable that the Charity itself will have to try running the Gregson directly at some point in the future and we cannot say at this moment what form the ‘new’ Gregson will take. For now, the most important thing is that the building is not lost to the bank because we cannot make our agreed loan repayments. So, we are turning to you, the local community to ask for your help in the coming months until we get back on our feet.
